In February 2023 alone, a staggering 8.6 million foreign tourists explored India’s cultural wonders, signifying a notable increase from the 6.9 million visitors throughout 2022.

Renowned for its extraordinary cultural richness and marvelous architecture that never fails to attract visitors 

From the iconic Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders of the world, to adventurous treks in the range of Himalayas,

India houses a plethora of historical and cultural gems.

Discovering India is truly a delightful experience.

Here, I have curated a list of Places of Indian Cultural Heritage for Travellers,

If you are one such enthusiast, this article is tailored for you.

From the regal city of Nawabs, Lucknow, to the vibrant Rajasthan, known as the city of Rajputs, here are some of the best Heritage and cultural destinations in India.

Ancient Indian Cultural Heritage

Lucknow, also known as the City of Nawabs, is the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.

This city holds the refined and majestic lifestyle of the Royal era during the reign of the Mughal Empire.

Due to this, it has a distinctive amalgamation of the Hindu and Muslim cultures (known as the Ganga-jamuni Tehzeed).

Nawab Asaf-ud-Daulah’s contribution to Art and Architecture is still alive in the city

Making it ranked high among the top places to experience Indian culture and heritage.

The City of Nawabs comprises a mix of European and Mughal styles in its Architecture.

Influenced by the reign of the Mughals, the Delhi Sultanate, the Nawabs of Awadh, and Britishers as well.

This amalgamation is also reflected in the cuisines of the city making it more rich, aromatic, and Flavourful.

While the Famous Bada Imambada is the highlight of the Best Places to visit in Lucknow with friends, you will also find other architectural marvels such as Rumi Darwaza, British Residency, the Highest Clock Tower of India-Hussainbad Clock Tower, Shahi Baoli, and other delightful glories of the city.

  Also called Calcutta – the capital city of West Bengal and is the Cultural capital of India as well.

  Earlier, this city served as the capital for more than a century for British India.

  Due to this, the city’s architecture and culture are rich with traces from the era.

 It is often referred to as the City of Joy, reflecting the joy and happiness found in its festivals, big or small.

While the ever-busy Howrah Bridge is the highlight of the city, you will also find the famous Victoria Memorial – stunning architecture of the Colonial era.

The city of Joy has a dynamic atmosphere, and despite changing times, its heritage and architectural style remain intact.

It’s a vibrant city that never gets tired of dreaming and finding joy in every aspect of life. 

Whether it’s a festival or not, people in Kolkata celebrate something, making it a city of happiness.

Hyderabad is located in the southern part of India and is the capital of the state of Telangana.

Known for its spectacular monuments and architecture, offering a unique blend of culture and traditions.

From its vibrant Nizami culture influenced by the Nizam rulers of Hyderabad to the majestic Charminar to its vibrant bustling markets to the exquisite pearls- This city has all the features of Indian Cultural Heritage.

Amritsar- the golden city of Punjab is the heart of the Sikh culture.

Founded by Guru Ram Das in 1574 as a holy town.

The city is a major tourist attraction and the home to the Golden Temple, making it the holiest pilgrimage site for the Sikhs- the most visited Gurudwaras.

The iconic Golden Temple seamlessly blends the intricate architecture with warm-hearted people and captivating peace attracting devotees from every corner of the world to seek blessings

Udaipur also Known as the City of Lakes holds the top position when it comes to scenic beauty, picturesque lakes, and Royal Heritage.

When I visited Udaipur, I was mesmerized by the aura and captivated peace it has to offer.

From the peaceful Lake Pichola to the timeless beauty of the Fateh Sagar Lake, you’ll experience in-depth grandeur and serenity.

The colorful and lively festivals, the vibrant local markets, the intricate carvings of the iconic temples the fusion of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture

This is the perfect place for those who like to combine cultural experiences with Royalty.

Jodhpur, the blue city in Rajasthan is one of my Favourite Cities.

I loved exploring the plethora of experiences it has to offer when it comes to vibrant and culturally rich destinations.

The most amazing view is the blue-painted houses in the old parts of the city.

Heaven for photography enthusiasts.

This city houses the gateway of the great Indian desert – Thar Desert.

The most fascinating thing to witness here is the swift change in the colour of the sky in the evening making it a sun city due to the sunny weather throughout.

For a reason, Jodhpur is visited by thousands of tourists every day making it a great destination to explore the local culture and traditions

Also known as the Golden City because of the glittering yellowish sandstones used to build the entire town and so in the forts, temples, and houses.

These yellow sandstones paint the entire town giving it a golden look.

Established by Maharawal Jaisal Singh in 1156 AD.

This city fully preserved the most fortified cities in the world and houses the UNESCO World Heritage site – Jaisalmer Fort.

This fort is the amalgamation of intricate architecture and historical significance depicting the importance of Indian Cultural Heritage.

From the Iconic Desert Safari experience to the Unique Havelis and the heritage museums, is a living legend of historical and cultural vibrancy holding the regal legacy of Rajasthan.

Situated in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, Mysore is a prominent city to explore.

Also known as The Palace City or the Royal City of India for its beautifully built Palaces and holding rich history of Royal Heritage.

It serves as the cultural capital of Karnataka. 

This Royal city serves a rich historical background, making it a gem to discover about Indian heritage and culture.

Your visit will not be complete without exploring the spectacularly built Mysore Palace-

The most famous attraction of the city.

Apart from this, you can also walk through the city’s old amazing museums showcasing stunning art galleries of traditional paintings of the Vijayanagar kingdom (Mysore paintings) and Mughal empire (Ganjifa art).

The Indian state Kerala is known as God’s own Country as it has amazing natural beauty and an incredible network of backwaters covering nearly half of the state surrounded by the Arabian Sea.

This place holds the position of one of the largest salt deserts in the world for its unique white landscape, especially during the dry season when the salt crystals reflect sunlight, giving it a mesmerizing white appearance.

Here, The Annual Rann Utsav stands as a primary attraction, dedicated to honoring the rich cultural heritage of the region through vibrant displays of music, dance, and exhibitions showcasing handicrafts.

The place is a popular tourist destination, especially during the winter months when the Rann Utsav takes place.

The perfect amalgamation of the Hindu and Jain temples famous for their intricate and exquisite sculptures showcasing the finest examples of Architecture.

Located in a small town in the Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh, India.

This Place holds all the characteristics of Indian cultural heritage.

The small town also offers insights into rural life and traditional crafts of Madhya Pradesh.

Located in Karnataka, Hampi is a treasure of the world’s most amazing monuments and temples.

It is the Capital of the Vijaynagar Empire, a Kingdom known for wealth and prosperity.

Hampi holds the ruins of the Vijaynagar Empire,reflecting the Dravidian style of Architecture and art.

Hampi was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, recognizing its historical and architectural significance- attracting tourists, historians, and archaeologists from around the world.

As soon as you enter the land of Hampi your mind will be filled with curiosity to uncover the storied past and ancient Indian cultural heritage.

Uttarakhand is situated in the Himalayan region and is often referred to as “Devbhoomi” or “Land of Gods” due to the presence of numerous temples and religious sites.

There are other major cities to visit in Uttarakhand which include Dehradun, Haridwar and Rishikesh, Nainital, Almora, and Mussoorie.

The tourism industry plays a vital role in Uttarakhand’s economy, attracting visitors with its natural beauty, religious sites, and adventure activities.

The state also has a rich cultural heritage, with traditional dance forms, music, and festivals reflecting its diverse ethnic communities.

And, here we come to the end of exploring and diving deep into the unique places of Cultural and Indian Historical architecture to learn about the rich history and traditions.

While it’s true this entire list of places is not enough when it comes to the types of Indian cultural heritage places.

There’s still a whole bunch of other places to discover.

As a beginner, these spots are awesome for getting started and trying out different experiences.
