Founded in the 16th century by Maharana Udai Singh II (12th ruler of the Kingdom of Mewar), Udaipur established as the new capital of the Mewar Kingdom under the Sisodia dynasty of Rajputs.
It is located in the southern part of Rajasthan, nestled in the Aravali Range of Hills.
The city is often referred to as the “City of Lakes” or the “Venice of the East” due to its scenic beauty of the lakes.
It’s a popular tourist destination and attracts visitors from around the world because of its soothing and relaxed atmosphere making it one of my favorite cities to visit in Rajasthan.
Hindi and Rajasthani (Mewari) are the common languages spoken here.
The major highlight is that this city still manages to preserve age-old rituals and traditions while also embracing modern changes and ways of living making it the most prominent place to visit.
To ensure a fantastic time in Udaipur, it’s essential to plan your itinerary in advance.
By doing so, you won’t miss out on any must-see places during your visit.
In this guide, we’ll outline all the key attractions you can explore in Udaipur within two days. However, I highly recommend allocating an extra day if possible, to truly immerse yourself in the city’s best offerings.
To make it easy for you, I’ve categorized the city into two distinct parts: the old and new areas.
This division will help you navigate through every corner with ease and discover all that Udaipur has to offer.
Also for a more authentic experience, consider booking your accommodation in advance in the old area of Udaipur, known as Lal Ghat, Situated on the eastern shore of Lake Pichola, this historic part of the city is bustling with a unique charm and vibrant atmosphere, distinct from the newer parts.
To escape the hustle and bustle of modernity, immerse yourself in the old areas of Udaipur.
During your stay, you’ll have the opportunity to explore numerous historical and cultural experiences.
The areas covered in this itinerary include Lal Ghat, Jagdish Chowk, Gangaur Ghat, Hanuman Ghat, Haridasji Ki Magri, Clock Tower Area (Ghanta Ghar), Hathipol, Chetak Circle, Swaroop Sagar, and Fateh Sagar.
In this 48-hour itinerary, I’ll highlight the top places to visit in Udaipur, along with their respective locations to make exploration easier for you.
Your mission today is to immerse yourself in the historical architecture of the palaces and temples nestled in the old area of Lal Ghat, alongside exploring the traditional markets of the city in the evening.
Lal Ghat boasts a traditional charm with budget-friendly hotels, delightful rooftop restaurants, and captivating handicraft shops.
Our first stop will be the majestic City Palace, conveniently located within the boundaries of Lal Ghat
Note – The road leading to the main gate of the City Palace is also known as City Palace Road.
It’s been said that Your Udaipur itinerary is not complete without visiting the iconic City Palace.
This intricate marvel is the fusion of Mughal and Rajput-style architecture and is the second-largest palace in India after the Mysore Palace.
It was completed over about four hundred years by the 22 rulers of the Mewar dynasty
The construction of this huge palace was initiated when Maharana Udai Singh decided to shift the capital of Mewar from Chittorgarh to Udaipur in 1559.
It is said that due to the recurring threat of wars with the Mughals, Maharana Udai Singh chose this location to build the City Palace as it was considered highly secure, surrounded by the lofty Aravalli Mountains, forests, and the Pichola Lake
Fun fact: The architecture is designed like a Labyrinth from the inside to confuse anyone who ventures in.
Perhaps it’s for these reasons that the legacy of Mewar has never been conquered by any enemy.
This Palace has a sprawling huge campus with main entry gate named Badi Pol (great gate) taking you to the main courtyard grounds surrounded by well-maintained gardens.
Note: Inside the City Palace, you’ll come across several gates known as “poles,” Tripolia Pol (the northern entry gate to the complex) and Hathi Pol (Elephant Gate). Don’t let these gates confuse you; they all lead into the City Palace grounds.
You’ll come across the Museum of City Palace inside the magnificent City Palace of Udaipur.
As soon as you enter, the first thing you will see is the statue of Lord Ganesha, which is 400 years old from here you’ll enter the main museum room where the original weapons of Maharana Pratap were kept made of iron for protection during battles, and by looking at it, you can tell how strong it would be.
There were also other unique displays of weapons, accessories, and war paintings.
I found all this very interesting.
From the museum take the steep stairways and low height doors capturing all your attention.
These stairs and small doorways will take you to the different floors of the palace connecting different areas.
Tip: If you’re tall, be cautious when crossing through these small gateways to avoid bumping your head.
After passing the stairs you’ll arrive at the crowning hall where the new kings were crowned and a tub full of silver coins were kept to be thrown to the people of the courtyard as a gift from the newly formed king.
Now, reach the fourth floor of the palace to see the huge Garden and other interesting antiques.
One such is these Cages from that era made of brass.
In those days, there were no postmen, so at that time, pigeons were kept in these cages, which acted as messengers.
And now coming to the huge courtyard with a garden.
There, you will see many large trees planted, although no soil has been added here.
So, the question arises, how are these trees on the fourth floor without any soil?
Let me tell you.
The entire area you’ll be seeing is the top of the mountain, i.e., you are standing on the top of a mountain.
The roots of all these trees go inside this mountain.
So, there is no room built under this entire section.
You can have a chill time here by sitting on the benches and experiencing the amazing cold breezes.
Now, take another steep flight of stairs and witness some beautiful rooms and Jharokhas (windows) decorated with mirror glasses.
Fun Fact – The beautiful mirror glass room was constructed with inspiration from the sheesh mahal of Amer.
Other sights inside the city palace will include the king’s Administrative assembly place called Diwan-e-aam, the Kitchen and other rooms of that era, the silver gallery, and other crystal galleries.
To enter this palace, the ticket price will cost you around INR 300.
The palace is open to visitors every day from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM.
But I recommend you to visit here first in the morning as exploring the entire city palace will take around 2-3 hours.
After exploring the city palace, go for a boat ride in Lake Pichola.
Thanks to this artificial lake being built, renowned for its scenic view of the surroundings and is one of the most iconic landmarks in the city.
It is one of the most beautiful artificial lakes you’ll come across, created in 1363 AD by Pichhu Banjara, a local tribal chieftain.
Later on, Maharana Udai Singh II, the founder of Udaipur, expanded the lake in the 16th century to provide a water source for the city and to enhance its beauty.
Taking a boat ride is One of the best ways to experience the beauty of Lake Pichola
Note- You can easily go for the boat ride from the inside gate of the city palace
The boat ride will give you the majestic views of the city palace, temples and ghats, and other well known luxury hotels such as Jag Niwas (now known as the Lake Palace) and Jag Mandir, creating a stunning backdrop that captivates visitors.

During your ride, the boat will drop you at the island palace of Jagmandir.
This island palace is only accessible by boat from the City Palace or the shores of Lake Pichola, making it a unique destination to explore.
Built-in the 17th century by Maharana Karan Singh as a pleasure palace for royal leisure and entertainment.
Fun fact – Do you know this palace served as a refuge for Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan during his exile from the Mughal Empire in the 17th century? It is said that the design of the Taj Mahal was inspired by the architecture of Jag Mandir.
Now this beautiful island Palace hosts various festivals and celebrations throughout the year, including music concerts, dance performances, and art exhibitions, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Udaipur.
You can spend around 1 hour here, exploring the palace’s various attractions, including the Durbar Hall, adorned with beautiful paintings and stained glass windows, and the Garden Courtyard, featuring lush greenery and fountains.

After exploring the island you can get back to the main area of the city palace by taking a ride to the next boat available from there.
There is no cost to be paid for visiting the island Palace.
Now, coming back from the city palace exit you can go to see the famous Jagdish temple.
It will hardly take around 30 minutes to discover the cultural significance and intricate carvings of the temple.
You can easily walk around for 3-4 minutes from the Badi Pol Gateway of the City Palace to reach the temple as it is located at a distance of approximately 150 meters only.
Built by Maharana Jagat Singh I, who ruled Udaipur during the 17th century.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe, and is considered one of the largest and most beautiful temples in Udaipur.
It showcases a stunning fusion of Indo-Aryan architectural styles, characterized by intricately carved pillars, ornate ceilings, and sculpted walls.
The temple is often included in cultural tours and heritage walks, allowing visitors to learn about its architectural and cultural significance.

Planning a visit to the City of lakes in the summer can be slightly challenging as due to the temperature rise the weather is extremely hot making it difficult for you to go on heritage walks and sightseeing in the morning.
I visited Udaipur during the monsoon, in July. The weather was great as there was plenty of natural greenery surrounding the city beautifully. However, due to moderate rainfall, it was a little risky to go to the mountain areas and enjoy activities like hiking and sunset boating across the lake because of the gloomy weather.
So as per your convenience, I suggest planning your trip during the winter months, from October to March as the weather is pleasant and comfortable making it ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities.
Note: Also if you plan to visit in December and January, be ready to expect higher hotel prices and larger crowds at popular attractions as these months mark the peak of the tourist season.
Udaipur is not only about hills and palaces; there are also other famous landmarks waiting to be explored, such as Bagore Ki Haveli, Ahar Cenotaphs, the cultural performances at Lok Dharohar Haveli, and the vintage car museum.
Every corner holds a delightful story of rich history!
I was amazed by the abundance of offerings in this beautiful city.
Udaipur provided me with an unlikely weekend adventure that exceeded my expectations.
If you haven’t considered visiting Udaipur yet, I urge you to add it to your list. You won’t regret it!
